We recently had a local photographer Elliot Swanson from Ground to Kitchen come by the studio to take some snaps for us. Here are a few of my favourites including some lovely snaps in our studio garden.
It’s always lovely to collaborate with local people and we look forward to shooting more with Elliot in the coming months.
We’re busy preparing for the Gift and Homewares trade show Life Instyle which we’ll be exhibiting at in early August. I can’t wait to share the new products we’ve been working on!
Welcome to our re-vamped website! Now that our blog is displaying properly again it’s time for a few catch up posts.
We are very excited to now be based in Maleny on the Sunshine Coast. Our new studio is a part of a 5 acre property that used to be an avacado farm. We are surrounded by Avacados, lychees, beautiful pecan trees and rolling green hills, perfect for getting the dream garden organised.
The Sow ‘n Sow studio is in a renovated shed at the front of the property. After laying a new slab, replacing the roof, swapping garage doors for large sliding doors and adding a window to the East for light, we now have a beautiful, bright airy studio with room to grow. After moving from Melbourne to Castlemaine to Brisbane before Maleny, it’s great to be all set up in a permanent location which we have full control over.
Welcome to our new website! We decided it was time for a refresh, a modernisation and a technical upgrade of our online presence so we spent a few months tinkering away in the background before launching the new site in late April. I hope you like it!
Other things keeping us busy include Mother’s day with our Chrysanthemum Gift of Seeds making a come back this year and the launch of a new smaller display stand for stockists.
In February we sadly said goodbye to our first staff member, the beautiful, hard working Catalina who was with us for 2 years. Cat has moved back home to Singapore for a year before starting uni next year. We miss you Cat!
To fill her absence my awesome friend Lauren has been helping out in the studio. She is also our studio buddy which is highly convenient! Loz has also just launched an incredible range of Australian made silk scarves under her brand No Home.
Our Flower Press was featured in the Herald Sun Home Magazine on the 18th of April, White Magazine featured our Golden Wattle Gift of Seeds in a recent issue and Country Home Ideas included a lovely write up of our Enchanted Garden and Bug Wonderland Gifts of Seeds in their March issue.
We are quite a bit obsessed with Instagram lately and there’s been so many great shots of our products from stockists and customers that I wanted to share them here so they don’t get lost forever.
My sister Madeleine Brady came to hang out at the Sow ‘n Sow studio late last year and while there she tidied up the place and took some photos, lucky me! Maddie is an artist and works for Olsen Irwin gallery in Sydney. She manages and curates Olsen Irwin Works on Paper, Small Paintings and Sculpture and also writes the articles on their blog. Sweet job Mads! Her own blog is also quite a treat.
Hello 2014! It’s always nice to do a bit of reflecting in January of what our previous year looked like. 2013 was an exciting year filled with achievements and growth for Sow ‘n Sow, here are a few of the highlights:
Launching our Australian Natives collection
Designed in collaboration with Daniella Germain (who’s stunning illustrations adorn the packaging) our Australian Native collection of Gift of Seeds have been very well received, getting especially popular at Christmas when we sold more of the Natives than we did our original Gift of Seeds collection, which went against the normal trend for more sales of our ‘original‘ collection earlier in the year.
A growing team
Catalina joined us in March 2013 and helps us with all of our product assembly and order fulfilment. And August joined us in November to help manage the sudden surge in our work load over Christmas. Both Cat and August are now highly valued members of our team.
Some great press
In 2013 our products were featured in Home Beautiful Magazine, Your Backyard, Yen, House and Garden, Country Home Ideas, Artisan, Gardening Australia, Sunday Life and Your Garden to name a few! We are extremely grateful for the exposure.
Our first Christmas Gift of Seeds
In August 2013 we launched our ‘Christmas Greetings’ Billy Buttons Gift of Seeds which was so well received that we ran out of stock in October and had to re-print! We hope there are Billy Button seedlings filling gardens all over Australia at the moment.
We are thrilled to now have our products stocked in over 100 fabulous retail outlets across Australia including boutique gift shops, florists and eco retailers.
The Big Design Market
Being part of this massive market event held at the Royal Exhibition Building at the busiest time of the year was really exciting for us. It was great to be public facing again as we haven’t done a market in a long while. We met loads of lovely customers, had great chats with like minded creative businesses and the honourable Stephanie Alexander popped by which was a thrill to hear even though I wasn’t there at the time!
2014 is likely to be another big one. A new team member is due to arrive in early March, unfortunately this one is going to need a few years of training before we can put her to work! To coincide with becoming a mother for the first time, we will be launching a Mothers Day Gift of Seeds with Chrysanthemum in the coming weeks, so stay tuned! We are looking forward to celebrating another great year of sowing seeds. Thank you for all your support and interest in 2013!
We’re really proud of these custom designed Gifts of Seeds for a few reasons. Firstly because they are part of a fabulous program which celebrates sustainable living and ‘growing your own’, and secondly because we had the opportunity to work with The City of Sydney!
We were delighted to hear that the council’s Sustainability Marketing team thought our Gifts of Seeds were great, and that they’d love to have a custom design for the Green Villages Brand. Green Villages is all about inspiring individuals to live more sustainably. They hold workshops on creating balcony gardens and growing food in small spaces, and they have just launched a website all about educating the community on how to live green!
We aren’t exactly sure where or when the packets will be handed out at this stage, but there are two kinds, organic basil and organic coriander to look out for. They are quite distinctive in their 100% recycled packaging, so if anyone sees them around, please let us know!
Since being back in Melbourne we have continued working at a million miles per hour with Life Instyle which started just 2 days after we arrived home. It was wonderful being there in the beautiful old Royal Exhibition Building and we met lots of wonderful people including a lot of new stockists and the very creative businesses beside us including Maud ‘n Lill Organic Cotton Toys, Babushka Baby and Love Luck and Wonder.
We’ve still found a little time to seek out nature in art and design. I have just discovered this very cool work by Mona Hatoum called Hanging Garden (2008), 770 jute sacks filled with grass seeds. If only the out-of-control grass in my front garden could look as stylish!
It is with great pleasure that I introduce the three new Gifts of Seeds: Poppy, Forget-me-not and Oregano! These were especially selected because the seeds can be sown in the cooler months of the year so our Gifts of Seeds are suitable all year round.
Poppy’s are an incredibly beautiful delicate flower and an absolute joy. We’ve chosen the flanders/ corn poppy variety so expect those stunning orange-red petals with beauty spots when they flower in spring. The seeds can be sown in autumn and winter.
Forget-me-not is a sweet cottage garden plant which produces masses of tiny bright blue flowers. The seeds should be sown before winter and will blossom in spring. They are also one of those clever plants that re-seeds itself, ensuring seedlings will emerge year after year in the same spot as were sown the first time around.
And who doesn’t love Oregano, the taste of the mediterranean, the taste of pizza! A lovely plant for the herb garden or pot with gorgeous little leaves, white flowers and of course a lovely scent. It is a perennial too so will provide years of flavour.
All three are now available to purchase in our online shop and we will be supplying them to stockists in the coming weeks. I have also created a pack of three so you can purchase all three at once via our online outlets for $25.
I am very excited to share some insight into the other things I’ve been working on as part of the Sow ‘n Sow product range.
Whilst the Gifts of Seeds are by no means done and dusted (three new ones will be available in just over a week!) I always had plans to develop other innovative plant based gifts and I’ve been playing around with Terrariums and Airiums for a while now. My poor friends have suffered birthday gifts of the ‘product development’ kind for the past few months in the form of notquitethereyet jars full of mosses and ferns.
Then I met Stewart Russell, the artist, designer and owner of Spacecraft who creates a beautiful range of screen printed bed linen, furniture, clothing and artwork at their awesome North Melbourne studio for the 2 Spacecraft stores on Gertrude Street Fitzroy and Malvern Road Hawksburn.
I met Stewart and his wife Donna to discuss ways we could ‘green up’ the Hawksburn store by incorporating more living plants which was a part of their vision for the store. Before long I was in-store making a big mess with bags of potting mix and plants, setting up some lovely planter boxes for a window display which complimented the Sow ‘n Sow Gifts of Seeds (now stocked at both stores).
But we wanted to get a bit more creative than that and after talking about my air plant ideas I was given a good reason to fully develop the concept, as Donna and Stewart loved the sound of them and wanted me to make some up for the store.
So, I have just delivered a trial run of 7 Airiums to the Hawksburn store. They consist of Tillandsias (living air plants) with lichens and mosses collected on weekend walks in the bush. A little living world inside a glass globe to enchant and inspire those peeking through the glass.
At this stage they are only available at Spacecraft Hawksburn for so get in quickly if you want one, there are only 7 for the time being!
Many thanks to Stewart and Donna for making this happen, and Vicky the Hawksburn store manager for her beautiful displays and good chats!
Sow ‘n Sow specialises in custom designed Gifts of Seeds which are ideal for corporate promotions. A gift of seeds encourages your guests or recipients to grow a plant which will cement the memory of the occasion for many years and generations to come. We can also tailor the seed type to suit the meaning or purpose of the occasion.
Prior to the christmas rush, team Sow ‘n Sow was busy fulfilling a very big custom order – 2,100 custom seed packets for McPherson’s Printing Group. With sustainability high on the agenda for the printing group, McPherson’s designers The Mangrove Studio suggested our seed packets as a fun, environmentally friendly gift for customers and a way to promote the versatility of the products McPherson’s produce. Three seed types were chosen – basil, sunflower and marigold, with cleverly devised messages relating to puzzle books, recipe books and romance novels included on the labels.
The colourful packets were designed by The Mangrove Studio and then lovingly hand assembled by us. Yep, each seed packet has been glued by hand, by us and all the seeds were carefully distributed into each of the 2100 packets alongside a gorgeous little planter marker (as pictured above, bottom right).
We are hoping 2011 will be a big year of custom orders so don’t hesitate to spread the word about this unique service. They are ideal as a gift for attendees at special events or functions and they can be intelligently incorporated into an effective, sustainable corporate promotion. The best part is that we can tailor the seed type to suit the event or purpose of the promotion. More info on our custom packets can be found on our Custom Designs page.
